ABOUT MARDIN CEMENT

In 1969, it was decided that a cement factory would be established in the city of Mardin to pioneer the construction and development of the Southeast Anatolia Region to meet the cement demand of the region and the neighbouring countries.

The Armed Forces Pension Fund at 40%, Turkish Cement Industries Inc at 40% and the local establishments and persons at 20% were the shareholders of the company.

After the studies carried out for raw material and ground surveys it was decided that the factory would be built within the boundaries of Kabala town, about 6 km away from Mardin. The foundation was laid on July 22, 1969, the orders for the machinery were given in 1970 and 1971, the assembling works were started on July 28, 1972 and the factory started operation on September 8, 1975. The first exportation from Mardin Cement Industry and Trade Inc. was realised to the Middle East countries in 1975 as 10,273 tons.

After turning the key in 1975, the factory started to meet the cement demands of the region, parallel to the economic development of the country and governmental investments in the vicinity. However, since the cement factories were taken into service one after the other; Adıyaman in 1983, Diyarbakır/Ergani in 1984, Siirt/Kurtalan in 1985 and Şanlıurfa in 1986 these demands could not pass over the limits of the installed capacity. Until 1992, no investments were made for any capacity increase, neither for modernisation nor for renewal works. Only an investment on rotary kiln was realised: due to the petroleum crisis of 1980, alternative fuel consumption system was installed to burn natural gas and powder coal alongside petroleum.

With the increasing demand for cement, parallel to development of Turkey and the region, the existing capacity could not meet the demand; so a decision for investment was taken in 2006, constructions of clinker production line II and cement mill III were started in March 2006. II. Clinker rotary kiln with precalcination and fully automated was ignited on March 31, 2007 and following the test production put into service as of June 2007. III cement mill started production in July 2007.

Taking into consideration the developed market conditions and taking into consideration the statistical data related with our products brought forward the idea that increase in the cement grinding capacity would be adequate. So, the investment for cement mill IV started in December 2007. With the increase of production with the joining of II. clinker production line in June 2007 and IV. Cement mill in August 2007 the clinker production capacity reached to 2 million tons/year and the cement production capacity to 3 million tons/year.
